The 91st Oscars took place last Sunday, February 24th in the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California. The red carpet began at 7 pm, with the actual awards ceremony going from 8 pm to 11 pm. Throughout those four hours there was beautiful dresses, historical wins and emotional speeches.

Some of the biggest winners of the night was “Green Book”, “Bohemian Rhapsody”, and “Roma”. “Green Book” went home with the most coveted award of them all, best picture. Along with best picture, “Green Book” won best original screenplay, and Mahershala Ali won best actor in a supporting role. “Bohemian Rhapsody” also won big with best sound editing, best film editing, and best sound mixing. Rami Malek (the star of Bohemian Rhapsody) also walked with best actor, after being nominated for the first time. “Roma” won best cinematography, foreign language film, and Alfonso Cuaron won best director.

Not only was the Oscars a big night for those movies, it was a big night for the record books. A record number of women walked away with awards that night (15). Best supporting actress winner Regina King is one of only three women to ever win that category. Ruth E. Carter made history as the first black woman to win best costume design. Hannah Beachler also made history as first black woman to win best production design, along with giving Marvel Studios its’ first Oscar.

The Oscars is always an exciting night, as Lakewood resident, Ella Calleri, says, “I always enjoy watching the Oscars. As an aspiring actress, I can really appreciate how hard all of those people have worked to get where they are.”
