Sophia Miranda is a junior at Lakewood High School this year, and has been a member of the school’s swim team for the past three years. We sat down with Sophia to chat about her swimming career.

Question: How long have you been swimming?

Answer: I have swum since I was eight years old. I first started swimming through Lakewood Recreation Swim Team, and that’s what made me want to be on the high school team.

Question: What is your favorite event at swim meets?

Answer: My favorite event is the 50-meter freestyle race. It’s the shortest distance, but that means you have to go the fastest. There is no room to mess up, and your start and stroke and finish have to be perfect. The event is usually over in less than 30 seconds, and that means it is very exciting because the race is usually very close.

Question: What’s your favorite thing about being on the team?

Answer: My favorite thing about being on the team is friendships I’ve made, and the fun we have during the winter season, as well as off-season.

Question: What are you looking forward to for swimming next year?

Answer: I am looking forward to improving my times for next year. This past year, my relay made it to the district level competition at the end of the season, and I am excited because hopefully I will be able to do that again! Beating my previous times is something that has happened every year, and maybe next year I can even make it to States!
