    Coyotes in Lakewood

    Coyotes in Lakewood

Yep, you read that right. Since the start of 2017 there have been multiple sightings and one report of an attack on a dog. The dog was bitten once by the coyote before being chased off by the owners. While the coyotes are not infamous for attacking humans it has been advised by the leaders of Lakewood to be aware of the animals and keep an eye out for them. The animals are particularly active during this time of the year because it is their mating season.

There are also said to be three “alpha pairs” of coyotes in Lakewood. One un the Southwest area of Lakewood, one by Lakewood Park, and one over by Madison Park. It was reported that one of the male coyotes was captured, this usually means that the rest of the male’s family will leave the area. If it is any constellation, the coyote captured was tested for rabies and it came back negative. This however, does not mean that all of the coyotes are negative for the sickness.

There are some measures that you can take to make sure that you or one of your pets are harmed by the animals. If you are going to feed your pet, do so inside so the smell of the food doesn’t attract the animals. Keep your pet inside if you can especially during the night-time, or if you are outside, keep it on a leash. If you have a compost pile, try to avoid putting meat in it. Oh yeah, and don’t feed the coyotes…
