U.S. to be Only Country Not in Paris Climate Agreement

The United States will soon become the only country in the world not in the Paris climate agreement. According to CNN, Syria plans on joining the agreement as announced by officials at the United Nations Climate Change Conference on Tuesday, November 7.

“I confirm that the Syrian Arab Republic supports the implementation of Paris climate change accord, in order to achieve the desired global goals and to reflect the principles of justice and shared responsibility, but in accordance with the capabilities of each of the signatories,” said M. Wadah Katmawi, Syria’s Deputy Minister of Local Administration and Environment. He also noted that prosperous nations “in their capacity as the primary contributors to climate change, should live up to their legal and humanitarian responsibility,” alluding to America’s failure to join the agreement.

According the New York Times, reporters wishing for a statement on America’s stance against the agreement were told to refer to one made by the White House after Nicaragua joined last month.

“As the president previously stated, the United States is withdrawing unless we can re-enter on terms the are more favorable for our country,” it stated.

Although the United States was originally in the Paris climate agreement, President Trump declared in June that the country was “getting out. And we will start to renegotiate and we’ll see if there’s a better deal. If we can, great. If we can’t, that’s fine.”

As of now, the U.S. is also not invited to the Paris climate change summit in December of this year.

Although many individuals, including former President Barack Obama, are against the United States’ isolation in climate change opinion, the Trump Administration stands by its position and actions.
