“Making Spirits Bright” at the Beck Center

Making Spirits Bright at the Beck Center

The Beck Center for the Arts – in our very own Lakewood, Ohio – always has many performances in store for the community. From dance shows to children’s plays to musicals and adult theater, there is something in store for audiences of all ages and tastes.

This weekend, the Beck Center’s Dance Workshop company along with selected students will perform their annual holiday show. Because the group only performs The Nutcracker every other year, this year’s choice is a unique performance called Making Spirits Bright. It features a variety of dance genres with choreography performed to holiday songs, laced with poetry throughout to connect it all.

Tickets are $10 for children and $12 for adults, according to the Center’s website. There are a total of four performances: one at 4:00 and one at 7:00 pm on Saturday, December 2, and one at 1:00 and one at 4:00 pm on Sunday, December 3. The show will take place in the recital hall of the Music and Dance Building of the Beck Center, located behind the main building.

Aside from these four performances, the ensemble will also have a sensory-friendly performance on December 8 during the school day. Members of the community- especially children from local schools- who may have disabilities or mental illnesses will come to this special viewing. The lights are altered, the music is lower, the doors remain open, and there is a special introductions so that the audience is in a more comfortable atmosphere.

The final performances will be December 9, when the group will go “on tour” to several nursing and assistant living homes throughout the area. Full costuming is brought along, and the dance students have the wonderful opportunity to “make spirits bright” for senior citizens and their families in a variety of settings as they do every year.

Watching the Beck Center’s holiday shows can be a wonderful tradition for any family, with smiling faces, unique dances, and exciting costumes. Aside from the joy it brings to the audience, it also supports Lakewood’s local art community. So, this year, be sure not to miss “Making Spirits Bright!”
