Did you know that Lakewood High School has a Dance Group? This year, the group will be holding a dance show open to the public on Friday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lakewood High School Civic Auditorium. Tickets are only $5! Tickets can be purchased on the PaySchool app or website. Here is the link: https://www.payschoolsevents.com/events/org/lakewood-city-schools-athletics
But what is Dance Group all about? Dance Group isn’t a sport or a club. It is a little bit of both and is run through the athletic department. Though they do not compete at dance competitions, they do have around 1-2 performances a year as well as performing at school assemblies.
How can you join? Every October, Dance Group holds a quick and easy tryout for any LHS 9-12 grader interested in joining the group. It is less of a tryout and more of an assessment of your skills to see which classes would work best for you! One of the adult advisors of Dance Group, Leslie Kolasinski, says, “Dance Group does not require any dance experience and we typically get a wide range of students, from those who have never danced before to those who have many years of experience.”
After the tryout, returning members of Dance Group will show parts of their choreography from their dances. Styles of choreography range from jazz, ballet, contemporary, hip hop, tap dance, tango, theatrical and cultural numbers as well. This allows members of Dance Group to see which dances they would like to join as well as allowing members to control how much time they will be committing to the group. Once everyone joins the numbers of their choosing, practice will begin!
Dance Group practices on weekdays, after school, in 30-minute time blocks. You only have to go to Dance Group when one of the dances you’ve joined is practicing! Every week leading up to the show, members of the dance group learn new dances, learn new skills, meet new people and make memories.
Dance group is led by two adult Advisors—Leslie Kolasinski and Patty Hays. Dance Group also has two Senior Student Directors—Gift Anya and Ariana Marich—and two Junior Student Managers—Josie Kavc and Lay Phalt Htoo.
If you are a student at Lakewood High School and want to practice dancing, maybe think about joining Dance Group next October. The Dance Group hopes to see you at their show on February 9!
