And the Lakewood Girls Varsity Basketball season comes to an end! The team had a great season this year. They had an overall record of 12-13 and became the first Lakewood team since 2016-17 to make it to districts!
Some of the seniors leaving this year were four-year letter winners. These players include Delaney Garcia, Ally Bookman, Lucy Henrikson and Sophia Zarbo. Other varsity seniors include Nora Germaine, Aseel Albadarin and Halla Kutkut.
The team is also filled with many underclassmen. Juniors on the team this year include Layla Smith, Elizabeth Doup, Ava Cuffari, Helen Fraunfelder and Madison Comer. Freshman Charleigh Doxley also played on the varsity team this year.
One of the team’s most exciting games was their win against Walsh Jesuit. Walsh Jesuit was ranked much higher than Lakewood coming into the game, however, the Lady Rangers were able to make a comeback and win the game 54-50. Shoutout to Delaney Garcia who scored 19 of the team’s points for this game. Another shoutout to Elizabeth Doup who scored a three-pointer to take the lead of the game, and then scored two free throws to secure the win. This game moved the team on to the next round of playoffs.
Sadly, the team lost their next game against Brush High School. When asked about this game, senior Ally Bookman commented, “We knew we were the underdogs going into the game but we worked hard to level the playing field and came out strong in the first half. However, we couldn’t hold on and fell a little short to the fifth seed, Brush.”
The girls’ basketball team had a great season this year and is ready to have an even better season next year!
