At the end of the 2023 baseball season one thing was clear: the LHS baseball field turf had passed its useful life. With the last re-turf happening in the early 90s, the field was in desperate need of an update.
Athletic Director Robert Sloane and Lakewood City Schools’ Director of Operations Chris Donahoe were willing and able to use $746,487 of the district’s permanent improvement fund to carry out the renovation.
Using contractor VASCO, it took nearly the entire summer break to complete but it was well worth it. As senior varsity player Andrew Krankowski says, “I like how we are able to use the field all year around and we aren’t going to get rained out as much anymore.”
On top of the returfing, Sloane had an additional batting cage created as there was only one before, leading to long wait lines and less practice time for all Lakewood baseball players. We will surely see the fruits of these improvements in the spring as Lakewood baseball begins in March.
