The story is centered around Elphaba, the misunderstood, smart, and fairy girl of emerald-green skin who grows up to become famous Wicked Witch of the West.
The musical is told from the perspective of the witches of the Land of Oz; its plot begins before and continues after Dorothy’s arrival in Oz from Kansas and it includes several references to the 1939 film and Baum’s novel.
Wicked tells the story of two unlikely friends Elphaba (wicked Witch) and Galinda (The Good Witch), who struggles through personalities and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love-interest, reacts of the Wizards corrupt government and, surprisingly Elphaba’s public fall from grace.
It’s original stars including Idina Menzel as Elphaba, Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda and Joey Grey as the Wizard. The original Broadway production won Tony Awards and six Drama Desk Awards, while its original cast album received a Grammy Award.
In March 2016, Wicked surpassed $1 billion in Broadway revenue. On August 16th, 2017, with its 5, 759th performance, it surpassed Mamma Mia! To become Broadway’s 7th longest running musical and 8th honest running show.
It’s based on 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, an alternative telling of the 1939 Wizard of Oz.
Try to get out and see Wicked sometime before they are done showing in Cleveland December 3rd, 2017. One of the best performances I have ever seen, definitely recommend it to everyone!
