This week’s featured athlete is freshman, Maizy Cunningham. She is the starting third baseman for the Lakewood High School’s varsity softball team. During the fall, she also plays volleyball for the high school. I had the opportunity to ask her a few questions during her study hall.

Q: How long have you been playing softball?

A: “I think I’ve been playing for about four or five years now.”

Q: What do you love most about playing softball?

A: “I love being able to take out anger when you’re running, hitting, or throwing your hardest to get the out. I also was able to make more friends and now I consider them my second family.”

Q: What do you love playing more, volleyball or softball? Why?

A: “I love playing softball more because it’s just something I’ve loved more and had a passion for! Plus everyone’s personalities and attitudes are hilarious.”

Q: What are your goals for this season and next season?

A: “I really just want to hit my first home run!”

Q: How did you first get started playing softball?

A: “I first played baseball and as the boys were getting bigger, my parents didn’t want me to get hurt playing with them so they switched me to softball.”

Q: Do you also play softball outside of school?

A: “Yes, I played 18u Emerald Necklace last year and I also played tournament ball.”

Q: Do you have any advice for anyone that would want to play softball?

A: “Play softball with a passion like it’s your life! Have fun while playing and enjoy every moment of it! Never give up when losing and never show any weaknesses! Then probably put everything you have into softball when you are playing and never let anything get the best of you.”
